What does a pet cemetery do?

We are asked this question many times. The answer is simple. We provide basically the same service as a human cemetery and funeral home, yet without much of the human traditional pomp and circumstance.

Because most pets only hold the sentiment of its own close family unit. And normally they do not come in contact with the family's wide circle of friends and other family members. Therefore, a pet's loss may only be experienced by its owner.

Rarely are pet funerals and/or burial/cremation services attended by a great number of visitors. Normally the grief is still felt by only the owner and its close family. Pet cemetery/crematory and funeral services operate on an individual basis.

Unlike the human funeral and cemetery industry, pet cemeteries handle most of the needs of the pet owners.

What should you expect of a pet cemetery?

Most pet cemetery operators started out as a special service of a boarding kennel or another sideline business. Most pet cemeteries were started by caring people, not to make a fortune, but provide a service to other pet owners.

Pet cemeteries are small compared to the size of our human counterparts. Most grave site areas are small, so it is possible to inter many pets in the same space as one human can be interred. Most grave sites are about 8 square feet and may be smaller as the relation to the size of the pet. The recommended size for a pet cemetery is about 3 acres or more.

Many states and localities do not have legislation or ordinances regarding pet cemeteries.

Over the past 10 years many pet cemeteries volunteered to set aside funds for long term care of the grounds and restrict the land used for the actual burial area where your pet will be interred.

Some states that have regulations for pet cemeteries require a care fund and deed restrictions be set up.

A deed restriction is your guarantee that the space where your pet is interred will remain a pet cemetery.

When choosing a pet cemetery you should ask to see a deed restriction preserving the space.

We provide a free gravesite to certified Leader Dogs, Police/Military K-9 Service & Tracking Dogs, or other certified service dogs (call for details)
